Useful Databases for Nurses

Bibliographic Databases enable you to search the published medical and nursing literature. We have many different databases to help you access information. Some especially useful ones include:

CINAHL - (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health). This database enables you to search the nursing literature from 1981 to the present. There is a good deal of overlap with Medline, but CINAHL indexes some nursing journals that are not found in Medline.

Health Business - Covers the business aspects of healthcare. Can be searched simultaneously with CINAHL.

MEDLINE (PubMed) - Medline is the National Library of Medicine's main bibliographic database. Probably the best place, along with CINAHL, to begin searching the literature.

Nursing@Ovid - Use the Ovid interface to simultaneously search Ovid Nursing Resources and MEDLINE content.

Scopus - A database of abstracts and citations in the sciences that includes unique tools for tracking and analyzing research. For example, when looking at your list of search results, you can see at a glance how often a particular article was cited by others and review those citations with one click.

Point-of-Care Databases provide evidence-based information that is helpful in clinical care. Some especially useful ones include:

ClinicalKey - A useful resource from Elsevier that contains approximately 1,000 electronic books, images, videos and more.

Clin-eGuide - Search EBM guide, MEDLINE, Ovid books, drug information, and national guidelines simultaneously. Also includes  a "Nursing Advisor" section that you can search separately.

Micromedex - Well-referenced drug information. Includes CareNotes (Patient Education information).

Natural Standard - Great information on herbals and integrative medicine.

BMJ Best Practice and UpToDate - Useful Point of Care tools, each with its own special features.
