Overview

Welcome to the The Baystate Medical Center Nursing Magnet Program.  This website provides resources specific to Magnet, including current publications, examples, definitions and sources of evidence for the four Magnet Model Components: Structural Empowerment, Exemplary Professional Practice, New Knowledge, Innovations & Improvements and Transformational Leadership. This guide also provides a forum to share stories and Magnet moments related to and in honor of the dedicated nursing professionals at Baystate Medical Center.

STRUCTURAL EMPOWERMENT

Structural Empowerment (SE)-Overview

 Nurses in Magnet-recognized organizations are involved in:

  • Shared governance and decision-making structures and processes
  • Partnerships with community organizations and
  • A life long learning culture

Decision-making and flow of information should be multidirectional among professional nurses.  This component also assures that the CNO and nurse leaders on decision-making bodies address excellence in patient care and the safe efficient, and effective operation of the organization.

EXEMPLARY PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

Exemplary Professional Practice (EP)-Overview


Nurses in Magnet-recognized organizations:

  • Use professional Practice Model (PPM) as overarching framework to align and guide care
  • Create care delivery systems that are patient-centered; delineate nurses' shared authority and accountability
  • Partner with patients, families, inter-professional teams to positively impact patient care and outcomes
  • Deliver care based in autonomous practice; resources (skills, knowledge) accessible to meet patient's unique needs
  • Provide peer evaluations evaluation and participate in competency assessments to ensure safe, autonomous, evidence-based care
  • Embrace nurse empowerment and advocacy for workplace initiatives such as ethical issues, rights, privacy, security, and confidentiality
  • Practice in culture grounded in safety, quality monitoring, and quality improvement
  • Demonstrate out-performance of national databases

Transformational Leadership (TL)-Overview
