Obtaining Articles: How to Verify References

Fixing Incomplete Citations

HOW TO VERIFY CITATIONS

BOOK CHAPTERS --

If you're looking for a chapter from a book or for conference proceedings, use WorldCat , a catalog with worldwide holdings, or LOCATORPlus , the National Library of Medicine’s catalog.

 JOURNAL ARTICLES --

1. PUBMED

If you’re looking for a journal article but don’t have the full citation, you can search PubMed via Single Citation Matcher, using the pieces of information you have such as  journal title, date of publication, volume, issue, page number or author name. Fill in the boxes with the partial information. If you don’t have good search results at first, try again by filling in fewer boxes with information.  Find Single Citation Matcher at the bottom of the PubMed page under PubMed Tools.

2. OVID

You can also use Ovid’s Find Citation feature. Go to Ovid through the Library & Knowledge Services Database tab, and link to Find Citation from the main page. Enter the partial information you have. If you don’t get results on your first try, enter it again putting different combinations of your information into the boxes.
